Lack of Diversification
Most successful professionals just leave their retirement in a 401k or IRA or hand their hard-earned investment over to a "financial advisor" who puts it in stocks and mutual funds. This is NOT diversification. It will protect you from a single stock crashing your portfolio, but equities are HIGHLY CORRELATED to one another. When the S&P falls, most equities fall with it. Diversifying to an additional asset class helps solve this problem.
Unpredictable Returns
Most investments, including equities (stocks/mutual funds), do not offer a fixed rate of return. This can work to your advantage, but also to your detriment. For example, the S&P typically returns 10% annually, but the highest 10-year return was from 1990 to 2000 at 20% annually. However, that was followed by the lowest 10-year return from 1999 to 2009, which averaged -3% annual return due to 2 worldwide financial crises. I love Vegas also, but that's not where I'm investing 100% of my retirement.
Little Control/Protection
You're busy, I get it. You don't have time to analyze every stock you buy, which is why you have a financial advisor. They keep you in a mix of high growth and dependable investments. But we have no control over when the next financial crisis hits (and it will), and your ownership in these companies is not backed by hard assets. There is nothing stopping your portfolio from losing 30%+ of it's value like happened to so many people in 2008.
